Fr. Andreas Blom was born and raised in Sweden. He grew up in a loving, albeit non-religious family, and it wasn’t until he was a late teenager that he started to ask himself spiritual and existential questions. Being of a secular atheist background, he began seeking answers for his many unanswered questions in both Oriental religions and various Western offshoots, but without any resolution. Much to his own surprise, he eventually had a spiritual encounter with Christ in a local Lutheran Evangelical congregation, which encouraged him to read the Bible and pray. He realized the treasure he had found in Christ, and had a deep desire to share it with others.
This led him to work in international missions, and in 1996 he moved to Colorado Springs, CO, where he joined an Evangelical mission organization called Youth With A Mission (YWAM). He spent almost a decade working with missionary work and development projects in Asia, primarily in China and India. In 1999 he met his future wife, also missionary with YWAM, who worked in tribal areas of northwestern India. They were married the following year, and subsequently moved overseas together.
After several years in Protestant missions Fr. Andreas and Theodora, although grateful for their Evangelical background, began to feel that many things were missing from their Christian experience. Reading Church history, and the writings of the Early Church Fathers made Fr. Andreas discover the deep liturgical and spiritual tradition of the Orthodox Church. St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Isaac the Syrian, and St. John of Kronstadt were especially strong influences in their conversion. After attending an Orthodox Vespers service at Holy Theophany Orthodox Church in Colorado Springs for the first time, they both knew that they had finally found their way “home.” They were baptized and received into the Orthodox Church shortly thereafter.
Fr. Andreas and Matushka Theodora have two adult children.
